This work revolves around the collaboration and expertise of farmers. Sea- and land-based farmers participating in the project have dedicated significant time, energy and space for everything from seaweed harvesting and processing to applying seaweed on their actual farms. They do this with the knowledge that this is a concept in its early stages and that there are many unknowns involved. Their dedication to promoting sustainability, and fostering strong regional food systems is clear, and the project team is honored to engage in this important work alongside them.
“Having a research project hosted on our farm has been a really neat opportunity. It’s been fun to grow relationships with the folks who come out each week and do soil readings. Though I am not a scientist in this trial, I do feel committed and very invested in the findings. Learning how the land and sea could perhaps mutually benefit one another with a direct impact on small-scale farming sounds interesting and hopeful!”
